Roman Smirnov was born in Tallinn, Estonia. He began studying classical guitar at early age privately and later in G. Ots Conservatory in Tallinn. He continued his education with J. Urshalmi and M.Meltzer at The Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and in Kassel Music Academy with W. Lendle in Germany. He attended master classes of A. Desiderio, T.Muller-Pering, K.Kotsiolis, V. Kanaras, V. Mikulka.
He participated in festivals in Russia, Estonia, and Scandinavian countries. In 1991 he was adopted by the Union of Composers in Estonia. He also recorded performances for television and radio.
Roman pays special attention to modern classical and baroque music. He transcribed number of works by Scarlatti, Bach, Soler, and Duphly for classical guitar. For the past few years Roman has been immersed in his own jazz compositions and arrangements.
In the late nineties I had the pleasure to have Mr.Roman Smirnovfrom Jerusalem in my class at the Kassel Music Academy. Mr.Smirnov allways showed great enthusiasm for music and especially for the guitar and his outstanding talent was quite obvious. In those years he was able to progress still in his instrumental skills, to develop his natural musicianship and to extend his repertoire. Later he dedicated to the world of Flamenco and as I have seen in a recent video he is now a brilliant performer in both styles classical and Flamenco.
’ve come to know Mr. Smirnov during his studies in the Jerusalem Academy of Music & Dance some years ago. Right from the beginning of his studies in Jerusalem he proved his outstanding personality as an ever-curious and adventurous young musician. Later I was impressed by his technique and musicality. It is quite rare to meet a young Guitarist with all those qualities.
